Episode Summary

The contractor fight is something I refer to as the six inches between your ears. We all have those voices in our heads or limiting beliefs. Having been a home improvement contractor myself for many years, I understand that battle and can relate to the other men and women working in the trades. Our mission is to bring respect and dignity back to the trades, and that starts with the way we think about ourselves.

After selling my contracting business in 2012 I started sharing my advice with a few of the other people I knew working in the trades and before long it grew into speaking at events and consulting. Today I have consulted with tens of thousands of contractors all around the world. Our secret sauce, like any great business, has been to give people a cause that they can rally around and is greater than just us. We named it the contractor fight, maybe because I’m a former Marine, because I believe when you have something important to you it is worth fighting for.

My motto is to live unafraid and I would challenge anyone to follow me in that endeavor. This is a personal motto for me that comes from my background of literally riding the short bus in grade school for two years. I was in a special ed class for two years and that set the tone in my life for years where I believed I was stupid and couldn’t compete with people intellectually. I lived most of my young adult life afraid to speak up and put myself out there, despite being a Marine and successful in business. Until I decided to go toe to toe and address that area of my life I was limiting my capabilities and missing out on opportunities.

If you are a home improvement contractor that is not crushing it and making money right now there is something seriously messed up with your business model. Ask for help, call my team, or simply go listen to our free resources. There has not been an easier time in recent history to sell your services to consumers. The issue is no longer work but production and from my perspective, the number one contributing factor to the problem is the message that you need to have a college degree to be successful. That is simply not true, and I get it because I was one of those that believed the messaging at first.

The best CRM you can buy is the one you will use to run your business. Most home improvement contractors don’t use one because they underestimate the value it brings to their business. If you want to stay small and struggle then don’t worry about adopting a CRM but if you want to grow your business, have more profit, and enjoy your life it is a necessity. Most small business owners already have processes in place, even ones they don’t realize. The purpose of a CRM is to help automate and streamline those processes so you get more jobs done and make more profit.
